SSGT was built for professionals who may have to make hard decisions while the situation is moving fast and the margin for error is thin.
Since 1997, SSGT has brought defensive tactics and firearms instruction under one expectation: practical skill, clear judgment, and decisions that can be explained after the encounter is over.
The work is demanding by design. Agency personnel train to control resistance, manage pressure, protect lives, and return better prepared to teach, lead, and act.
That is why SSGT teaches more than movement, marksmanship, or technique. Every repetition is tied to judgment, control, and the ability to explain what happened when the moment is over.
The goal is not simply to perfect technique. The goal is to prepare people to protect lives, prevail through adversity, and make sound decisions when the moment is real.
SSGT Through the Years
What began as a focused defensive tactics system continues to grow into a broader platform for officers, instructors, agencies, and specialized teams.
1997
SSGT is established, laying the foundation for practical officer-safety instruction for law enforcement professionals.
2003
Alabama POST adopts Vanguard, bringing SSGT’s defensive tactics system into academy instruction.
2014
Vanguard became a statewide academy training standard, required in Alabama police academies and, as of 2026, every Mississippi police academy.
Expansion
SSGT grows into firearms, corrections, corporate security, and instructor-level development.
Today
SSGT continues serving agencies that need disciplined instruction built for real consequences.
Deputy Scott Ward Top-Notch Instructor Award
Every SSGT instructor course includes a teach-back, where candidates step forward, teach their peers, and are evaluated by the people training beside them.
In November 2012, Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Scott Ward returned to SSGT for Vanguard Level One certification and was voted “Top-Notch Instructor” by his classmates. One week later, he was killed in the line of duty.
SSGT renamed the instructor competition in his honor because the award represents more than technical skill. It recognizes presence, preparation, and the responsibility carried by those who train others.
